I am a little late on the uptake, but I just read a fascinating article in the NY Times dated April 12 about the need for exericse. Does it really have benefits in weight loss? Apparently not, its just about eating less than you burn. And as we all know, in WOMEN it has shown to increase appetite, making weight loss MORE difficult. But not so for men- life just aint fair!
What is also interesting is that the article asserts that exercise is helpful in keeping weight off, because of the way it helps us to metabolize food. This is must read for all you healthy foodies/ gym rats/ cubicle sitters/ runners/ standers out there!

I have been working on a post about this article! It was fascinating that the exercise changed the way their bodies handled food intake!
Haha!!!! Great news. I hate to exercise
hahaha. me too! i loved this article!
Hi Kat
I think you would like a book called “The Slow Down Diet” by Marc David. From this book and other research I have come to understand that part of what is important about exercise is the intake of oxygen and how this affects metabolism and burning of the food you are eating. Mainly aerobic exercise. The rest of the types of work outs we do maintain muscle and keep the senuvial (sorry about spelling)fluids protecting the joints.
The slower we eat, the more we breath, the better more efficient the food is digested and then utilized.
He also explains the stress/weight gain connection and cortisol, which I think is so important for women to understand. Running, intense workouts, etc. aren’t particularly effective because they burn calories, they are effective because of the effects on the brain and stress reduction.
I have just begun jogging again, after about 15 year hiatus. I am up to 10 minutes, slowly. And it is a rush, remembering how mentally sharp one feels, how this energy seems to last all day. How this affects my eating habits the rest of the day, knowing I need to be good to my knees, hips and ankles in order to continue the good feeling.
Thanks for being out there, inspiring us.

Thanks for the suggestion, Georgia! That sounds like an excellent read- will look for it on Amazon. Good for you for getting back out there and joggin. That is awesome- I know exactly the rush you are talking about- what an exhilarating feeling to feel your body shift and change! Thanks for reading, and for your wonderful words of encouragement.
Great article! I don’t know why people think that exercise will make you lose weight if you eat more at the same time. It makes absolutely no sense.
I guess I lean more toward the male side of this though because when I take a run I completely lose my appetite for the rest of the day.
Common sense is all it takes. If you’re not losing weight with good exercise and you want to be, just take a look at what you’re eating and clean it up.
