I am a little late on the uptake, but I just read a fascinating article in the NY Times dated April 12 about the need for exericse. Does it really have benefits in weight loss? Apparently not, its just about eating less than you burn. And as we all know, in WOMEN it has shown to increase appetite, making weight loss MORE difficult. But not so for men- life just aint fair!

What is also interesting is that the article asserts that exercise is helpful in keeping weight off, because of the way it helps us to metabolize food. This is must read for all you healthy foodies/ gym rats/ cubicle sitters/ runners/ standers out there!

Fun Flavors

Good morning!

I woke up feeling much better today than I have in a week or so. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that yesterday I rested a bit and thought about what I was so stressed about- and what I could do to make things better. I took a few proactive steps to do what I could to make things better for myself, but also realized that certain things that were stressing me out are completely out of my control. You know the great saying:

God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
the courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.

They use this in AA but I think we can all improve ourselves and our lives if we try to live by it. I am definitely working on the wisdom part… and realizing that it is such a relief to just let things go that are not in my control. If I can’t change them, why stress about them?

This morning, I swam for 30 minutes straight: freestyle, some breast stroke, and kicking. I felt awesome when I was finished! I cam home, showered, and was in the mood for something light for breakfast. I saw the box of Kashi Autumn Wheat in the pantry…

I had a bowl of cereal with half a banana, a nectarine, a sprinkle of granola, and almond milk.

It hit the spot!

I love taking pictures in the morning light. Makes everything more beautiful…. Look at my kitty (OK, he’s a big fat cat) sitting next to the window!

He’s so handsome… (sigh).

Before I sign off, I wanted to talk briefly this morning about a law that was passed yesterday by the FDA to ban flavored cigarettes, including cloves. The idea behind the law is to protect kids and teens from getting hooked early. Many studies have shown that kids start smoking with flavored cigarettes.

I can only speak from my personal experience, so that’s what I will do. When I was a junior in high school, a lot of my friends started smoking, so I did too. I thought it was SUUUUPER coo to take lunch breaks, drive with my friends, and smoke in the car- and then come back to school. Such a bad ass I thought I was! My favorite cigarettes were definitely cloves and menthols, which didn’t taste like “real cigarettes” and were fun to smoke. They didn’t make your breath smell bad, either- I remember liking that!

I continued smoking at college and was smoking waaaay too much by the middle of my freshman year – especially when I was feeling stressed (which was all the time). And I cannot tell you the number of people I met my freshman year who said they “didn’t smoke” but smoked cloves, because they weren’t “real” cigarettes. The problem is that they are- they have all the bad stuff in them that regular cigarettes do. They are no less tar filled or addictive.

Luckily, I was able to see the light and realize that I wanted to be healthy and athletic, not a smoker. I stopped pretty much cold turkey by the middle of my sophmore year, but I know a lot of people who didn’t and now fee like they can’t. They are completely addicted and smoking is their crutch in times of stress. SO, in my opinion, this law is wonderful. It will make it harder for kids and teens to access flavored cigarettes (though i am sure they will be sold on the black market) and harder for big cigarette companies to get people hooked when they are young.

What do you guys think about the government stepping in to do this? I am interested in your opinions!

So, there was the same exact salad bar tonight at dinner tonight as every other meal….. ugh, I’m getting sick of it!

I mixed things up by adding a spoon of ranch and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese. At the cooked food bar, there was salmon and mashed potatoes. The potatoes definitely looked like the “instant” kind, so I just had a whole wheat role to fill my carb craving.

The salmon was pretty decen’t. It had a kind of maple glaze on and was topped with walnuts.

I’m curious- what do you guys do when you are on trips for business and can’t cook? Do you get antsy to get back to your kitchen like me? I can’t wait- I’m home tomorrow around 5:30 and probably won’t be able to blog til then. I’ll be dreaming of all the things in my fridge tonight…

P.S. Non food related, but I was so sad to hear that Ted Kennedy passed away. He was a huge role model for me and stood for so much that I believe in- working to make this world a more equal, fair place for all. He was courageous, outspoken, and stood for what he felt was right, no matter what. May he rest in peace.

I hope you all will read this incredible article on the front page of The New York Times today, about the plight of women in the world, particularly the developing world. As someone who writes about food and health, I don’t want to ignore the fact that I am LUCKY and blessed to have been born in a country and into a family where I had the opportunities, education, and resources to go to school and to build a safe and healthy life for myself. I feel lucky to be able to have food on my table everyday and to be able to access and use a computer. I have traveled quite a bit in the developing world, and have worked with a number of immigrant women in this country, and I know that not all women are as lucky as I have been. How crazy is it that ONE PERCENT OF THE WORLD’S LANDOWNERS ARE WOMEN?

But I believe this is something we ALL can do something about- the world can and will change if we each do small things to make the world a better place for all. 🙂
